This scene has been dramatically altered since this picture was taken.  A very large landslide about a mile upstream from here has washed
enormous amounts of dirt and trees down to here, which had to be removed from the creek with a lot of heavy equipment.
One consequence is that these trees are now gone.  For more information on the still-active landslide, this link has pictures:
